Silicon photonic waveguides for mid- and long-wave infrared region

چکیده
Silicon photonics is experiencing a dramatic increase in interest due to emerging application areas and several high profile successes in device and technology development (Liu et al Nature 427:615, 2004; Rong et al Nature 433:725, 2005; Almeida et al Nature 431:1081, 2004). Conventional waveguides in silicon photonics are designed for the telecom wavelengths. However, midand long-wave infrared regions are interesting for several application areas including sensing, communications, signal processing, missile detection and imaging (Soref et al J Opt A Pure Appl Opt 8:840, 2006). The most popular waveguide platform in silicon photonics is the Silicon-OnInsulator (SOI) structure, in the form of either a strip or a rib waveguide. This material structure, however, is not suitable for longer wavelengths (except in the 2.9–3.6 lm range) due to the absorption spectra of silicon dioxide (Soref et al J Opt A Pure Appl Opt 8:840, 2006). In this paper, we discuss the design and fabrication of two different waveguide structures, the freestanding (Yang et al Appl Phys Lett 90:241109, 2007) and hollow core waveguides (Stanković et al Proceedings of 51th Conference ETRAN, 2007). The former is suitable for long-wave infrared applications as it has an air cladding, whilst the latter is a candidate for sensing in the mid-wave infrared wavelength region.

Silicon photonic waveguides for different wavelength regions
In this paper, we present our work on three silicon waveguide structures that are suitable for three different wavelength regions: near-, midand far-infrared. Design rules for standard rib SOI waveguides are given. Both single mode and polarization independence in these waveguides are discussed. A hollow-core waveguide suitable for gas-sensing applications in the mid-infrared wavelength region ...

Silicon integration of mid-infrared (MIR) photonic devices promises to enable low-cost, compact sensing and detection capabilities that are compatible with existing silicon photonic and silicon electronic technologies. Heterogeneous integration by bonding III-V wafers to silicon waveguides has been employed previously to build integrated diode lasers for wavelengths from 1310 to 2010 nm. Recent...

The last years showed an increased request for miniaturised, CMOS-compatible gas detectors. In contrast to sensors utilizing metal-oxide chemical interfaces, optical strategies are potentially faster and more robust. Recently we demonstrated CO2 detection by evanescent-wave absorption in the mid-infrared using a combination of an external laser source and silicon waveguides based on CMOS techno...
متن کاملA study of thermally-induced optical bistability and the role of surface treatments in Si-based mid-infrared photonic crystal cavities
We report the observation of optical bistability in Si-based photonic crystal cavities operating around 4.5 μm. Time domain measurements indicate that the source of this optical bistability is thermal, with a time constant on the order of 5 μs. Quality (Q) factor improvement is shown by the use of surface treatments (wet processes and annealing), resulting in an increase of Q-factor from 11,500...
